The former mayor of Bogota and former senator of the Republic was able to secure the victory in the Historic Pact coalition and officially becomes a candidate for the presidency of the Republic which is a post to which he aspires for the third time.

Gustavo Petro The huge turnout in the consultation made him the most representative representative of the Colombian left. He is an excellent potential presidential candidate, despite his controversial suggestions and opinions on a variety of areas.

Petro has expressed his intention to change the pension system by the establishment of a public administrator of pension funds that will operate the benefit of a "mixed and complementing system" in conjunction with private funds.

Gustavo Petro The candidate stated that Colombia does not have a retirement system, but instead the system is designed to make bank profits. Many believe this could prevent his from being President. Petro recently stated that although the pension system would not be eliminated but he would pursue reforms regarding pensions in order to guarantee a minimum retirement age for Colombians.  https://www.semana.com/semana-tv/vicky-en-semana/articulo/me-preocupa-que-gustavo-petro-llegue-a-la-presidencia/202157/ Petro also said that there is no need to raise the retirement age.

Another issue that has been a source of controversy is his repeated promises to end oil extraction once the time comes for him to become President. This has caused uncertainty for investors and the market overall.

Experts predict that Petro's proposal end to exploration for oil would cost Colombia the equivalent of $4.3 billion in loss.

This proposal also calls for the formation of an anti-oil front both in the region as well all over the world to shift the economy away from fossil fuels. I would invite Gabriel Boric to Chile and LuizInacio Lula de Silva to join me.

Petro claimed that he talked with Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain about his proposal.

His attitude towards health concerns is also controversial. He has been insistent about the end of EPS and replacing it with a model of prevention which "guarantees both the rights of individuals and not the financial gains of bankers".

He also has questioned the independence of the Banco de la Republica and declared that he will propose a reform in the event of becoming President.

Petro said that the Bank Board of Directors of the Bank was a part of the Democratic Center, a political party. "What we would like is a truly independent Bank of the Republic (...) and it is to us essential to ensure that the Board of Directors is represented by the entire community," the candidate said in the middle of the debate.
